Vivacious acting and extraordinary presence on stage
„I loved music before I was out of my diapers.“ - Maria Kataeva
Maria Kataeva's versatile mezzo soprano voice, sensual timbre, vivacious acting and extraordinary presence on stage, make her the ideal singer for the bel canto repertoire by Gioachino Rossini and Gaetano Donizetti. The self-confident, strong female figures that composers entrusted to mezzo sopranos suite her ideally. Besides roles such as Carmen (Bizet), Cenerentola (Rossini) and Rosina in "Il barbiere di Siviglia" (Rossini), she is also acclaimed as Olga in Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin or Polina in the composer's "Queen of Spades". Kataeva is also a much sought-after Mozart singer (Dorabella, “Così fan tutte”), interprets early music ("Dido and Aeneas", Purcell), and contemporary repertoire such as the Ronia in Arnecke's "Ronia, the Robber's Daughter".
As a highly versatile performer, Kataeva gives excellent renditions of breeches roles. Her portayals of Hansel in Humperdinck's "Hänsel und Gretel", Cherubino in Mozart's "Le nozze di Figaro", Idamante in "Idomeneo" (Mozart), Octavian in “Der Rosenkavalier” (Strauss) or the composer in "Ariadne auf Naxos" (Strauss) are convincing both vocally and dramatically. She also has enormous success in operetta and zarzuela, thanks to her linguistic flexibility, her clear pronunciation and acting skills, essential talents for both genres.
The Russian singer studied in Saint Petersburg and won numerous competitions. Among other prizes, she was awarded with the Audience Prize and the Second Prize of the expert jury at the 2019 Operalia competition and also honoured with a first prize in the general category and a third prize in the German category at the singing competition "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg". In 2014 she won the third prize at the Paris Opera Competition. Kataeva's career began in 2011 at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf.
